AMCOP Integration into the IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed

AMCOP Integration into the IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed 480 269 IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed

We are excited to announce a significant enhancement to the IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed: the integration of AMCOP (Aarna Networks Multi-Cluster Orchestration Platform). This new addition will allow IEEE Testbed users to perform tests around streamlining the orchestration and lifecycle management of 5G core
network functions.

What is AMCOP?

AMCOP is a Kubernetes-based orchestration and management platform developed by Aarna Networks. It focuses on the orchestration and lifecycle management of 5G and edge computing workloads. By leveraging AMCOP, users can efficiently deploy, monitor, and automate 5G core network functions, facilitating a more dynamic and flexible network environment.

The integration of AMCOP into the IEEE 5G/6G Innovation Testbed brings a multitude of benefits, enhancing the overall user experience and enabling advanced network capabilities:

  • Increased Efficiency: By automating routine tasks and providing powerful orchestration tools, AMCOP significantly improves the efficiency of network operations.
  • Enhanced Performance: Real-time monitoring and analytics help optimize network performance, ensuring high reliability and low latency for critical applications.
  • Seamless Orchestration: With AMCOP’s orchestration capabilities, users can easily deploy and manage complex network services, including network slicing and dynamic service chaining.
  • Scalability: AMCOP’s flexible architecture allows for seamless scalability, making it easy to adapt to growing network demands and evolving use cases.

Multi-Cluster Orchestration, Closed-Loop Automation and Lifecycle Management

Auto-scaling of network functions is crucial for the lifecycle management of the 5G core network. AMCOP allows network functions to scale up or down based on parameters such as the number of UEs (User Equipment) registered, the number of gNodeBs (next-generation Node B) connected, or the number of active sessions.

IEEE Testbed users can now take advantage of new use cases with the implementation of AMCOP:

  • Multi-Cluster Orchestration: Efficiently manages multiple clusters across different environments.
  • Closed-Loop Automation and Lifecycle Management:
    • AMF Auto-Scaling: Automatically scales Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) based on the number of UEs registered and gNodeBs connected.
    • UPF Auto-Scaling: Automatically scales User Plane Function (UPF) based on the number of active sessions.

Additional features of AMCOP include:

  • Declarative Intent-Based with Constant Reconciliation: Ensures the desired state of the system is always maintained.
  • Massively Scalable: Can scale from edge to cloud, handling varying infrastructure sizes.
  • Multi-Layer Support: Covers infrastructure, Container-as-a-Service (CaaS), and network services.
  • Cloud to Edge Orchestration: Utilizes the Nephio Kubernetes framework for seamless orchestration and management.
  • Policy Engine: Employs the CNCF Open Policy Agent (OPA) for policy enforcement.
  • Monitoring and Automation: Uses Kafka for both open and closed-loop automation.
  • Inventory Management: Manages inventory with JanusGraph.
  • Workflow Management: Utilizes Camunda for workflow automation.
  • User Interface: Provides APIs for user interaction, OSS and BSS integration, and a GUI via Grafana.
